In this review, Alex, Haley, and Kalia, discuss how the microbiome can serve as a reservoir for antibiotic resistance genes, factors that modulate this reservoir, including live microbial therapeutics, and strategies for studying the resistome and predicting transfer of resistance to pathogens.
